Academic opportunities abound at Living Water College Preparatory. Here are the many ways that a student can earn college credit and honors distinction during high school years.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT
Advanced Placement (AP) courses are available. Our 17 available AP courses are significantly more rigorous than those available at the local public schools, so one should carefully consider his or her readiness before selecting such a course. College credit for an AP course is gained by earning a passing grade on an AP Examination after successful completion of the course.
HONORS
Honors courses require additional rigor and hours per Carnegie Credit. An "Honors" endorsement is placed on the student's transcript for that course. There is no college credit for Honors courses.
DUAL CREDIT
Dual Credit is considered by many to be the best of both worlds. This is where the student takes a lower-level college course (such as English, Math, History, Government); a passing grade counts toward both high school credit AND college credit simultaneously.
Two options for Dual Credit are available.
Traditional Approach Dual Credit
Living Water College Preparatory has a standing arrangement with the local community college for our students to attend classes at their campus. This not only earns the student college credit, but also give him or her a taste of the college classroom environment. Prerequisites are a SAT minimum of 500 on both mathematics and verbal, or a passing score on the THEA. Student must be a high school sophomore or taking sophomore coursework.
Non-Traditional Approach Dual Credit
Our non-traditional approach dual credit courses are obtained through Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. These are self-paced and student-directed courses that allow for maximum flexibility. Prerequisites for this option are the same as with the traditional dual credit option.
CLEP
CLEP is by far the speediest and most economical manner to accumulate college credit. A College Level Examination Program (CLEP) testis an examination that evaluates an individual's college level knowledge gained through previous study. Living Water College Prep students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their proficiency in various subject areas and bypass undergraduate coursework they would normally have to take during their first two years of college.
LWCP students can earn up to 12 college credit hours though CLEP examinations. We have a standing arrangement with Wharton County Junior College to serve as a CLEP testing center for LWCP students. A $35 fee applies for each CLEP test, which is a bargain for THREE HOURS worth of college credit.
